My Top 6 Blogging Peeves

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Let me start off by saying that this post is not meant to come across as complaining, more as a helpful post of 6 tips for better blogging.

I've been reading and following a lot of new blogs lately and I've been seeing a lot of the same blogging mistakes over and over again. They may seem small but they can dramatically impact your readership in a very negative way.

Here are my top 6 blogging pet peeves...

(1.) Non-Reply Commenters

This is by far my biggest peeve when it comes to blogging. Even more than word verification... but don't worry that's number 4! It especially drives me nuts when I get asked a question from a non-reply commenter and I can't answer it back unless I track that person down.

I really enjoy answering my comments and continuing conversations. That's how I've met so many of my very best bloggy friends to begin with. But like everyone else, my life is busy. There's just not enough time to go searching for people all the time.

This peeve is really just about wanting to talk to and interact with my readers. So I beg you.. if you're a non-reply commenter or you don't know if you are or not, check out This Tutorial from Anyone Can Decorate to show you how to connect your email address to your blog and receive replies to the comments you're leaving.

(2.) No Following Widget

I love my followers! What blogger doesn't right? The whole point of writing a public blog is to gain readers and followers to your site. If someone new follows me via any social network and leaves me a comment asking me to follow back, I do... Usually.

If I get to your blog and a following widget is no where to be found, than how am I supposed to follow you back? I also don't like it when the widget is there but it's in a hard to find spot like all the way at the bottom, but I might be getting picky about that one.

To catch the eye of your readers and gain the most followers possible, make it easy for people to follow you and add the following widget to an upper spot on your side bar.

(3.)  Non-Public Profiles

Another peeve caused by the fact that I can even find your blog to begin with let alone follow it. If your profile is not set to public than it can make it hard for readers to navigate to your blog from emails and comments because it doesn't provide a link to you.

If your blog is connected to Google+ and your profile is set to private, it's the same thing. Again, it's all about making it as easy as possible to find and follow your blog.

Also, while I'm on the subject of profiles, in my opinion you should always always provide a link to your blog from any other social network you're involved in. This means Facebook, Twitter, G+, Pinterest, your Etsy Shop, your email signature, and anywhere else people might find you. The most obvious place the better!

(4.) Word Verification on Comments

You all know what it is.. You click publish comment and you have to type in the little distorted letters and numbers to prove you're not a spammer.

Frankly, I don't like it much but it doesn't stop me from commenting on a blog either. However, I have heard that some people won't comment if it's on.

I get that spam stinks but there are better ways to go about keeping it off your blog than Captcha word verification. Like turning on your comment moderation. To find out how to turn word verification off check out This Tutorial from Diana Rambles.

(5.) Really Looooooog Loading Times

I'm not the only one who dislikes waiting for a blog to load. Refer to peeve number one... I'm a busy bee and sometimes I just can't wait.

Find out why long loading times can hurt your readership and how to fix it here.

(6.)  No Search Box

This one stems from Pinterest. I can't tell you how many times I've been looking for something on a blog because the pin doesn't lead to the specific post, and there is no search box.

Then I'm done looking and I leave. If I'm there I like it, but I'm probably not going to search through 6 months worth of posts to find it and most people won't either.

It's really easy to add the search box gadget somewhere to your blog and you really should have it just in case this happens to you.

What about you? Do you have any blogging peeves of your own?

  2. I totally agree with this post. And thanks so much for the #6 tip! I've only been seriously blogging since August or so but I'm about to hit my first milestone. 100 posts! I'm at 99 this very moment. Now that I have somewhat of a back log the search box totally makes sense. But it hadn't even crossed my mind {UNTIL NOW that is!} <3 Thanks lady!

  10. yep! I take the time to reply to bloggers that have questions...it's then that I find out they are no-reply bloggers :(

  11. I think we should have a International blog word verification boycott. Maybe we can get blogger to cave and remove that feature. Especially to new small blogs, spam is HIGHLY unlikely. I will give it a try, but I am word verification impaired. Two strikes and no comment, I tried, really!

These are great tips. I wish I had found them all in one place awhile ago, I have been figuring it out on my own!:)

  13. Great advice! And thanks for all the quick fixes right in your post. I kept joggling back and forth, fixing as I went. I'm glad to report I actually didn't have many fixes to do, but it was good to know I was set up properly. Thanks!! Linda @ www.paperseedlings.com

  14. great list. i DON'T have the followers widget. i removed it a while back, because i was feeling really uncool and pathetic when people weren't liking me. so i removed it. now, i'm all over pinterest, twitter and facebook, so if people are following or liking me there, tey can find me that way. plus, i hate the competitive nature of seeing how many followers people have. but, i do understand the ease for people wanting to follow your blog.

maybe i will add that widget again and see what happens. not sure.

  15. Great post! I'm a new blogger and just went and checked for #1 and even though I haven't got any complains about being a Non-reply blogger I wasn't sure, I hope I didn't mess up something..so if you see this, check me out to see if I messed up or not, lol...Also I don't know where to find the GFC widget. I think I need one..but I think I feel a little like Mama Lola and I'm afraid it will send people away if they see that my blog doesn't have many followers..kind of a double edge sword! I would love to hear your opinion about this. I'm just starting blogging and this will be greatly appreciated! Lizy

  16. Hi there and thanks for all the comments guys! TO Mama Lola and Lizy, I totally understand your point behind not showing the following widget on your blog. However, if you are serious about blogging and you are serious about gaining followers, it's best to at least have it on there somewhere. Lizy you can find the widget in your layout. Just click add a gadget and find it on the list :)

Being a newbie blogger can be completely overwhelming and make you feel self-conscious but we've all been there at some point. I definitely think you'll gain more followers from the widget than scare people away with it.

The main thing I can try to tell you is that you really have to concentrate on your own blog and content or else you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Also, if you're concerned with the amount of followers you have try linking up to some blog hops that are in your blogging niche. Leave nice comments and people will follow. Hope that helps :)

  17. I totally agree with what you wrote, especially about the captcha. Sometimes the letters and numbers are illegible and I try over and over and after 3 times I just give up and don't comment on the blog. Pinned this!

  18. Super helpful! Esp. #5. Someone had mentioned they had a slow internet and it took forEVER to download my blog. I thought if I didn't have ads, it shouldn't take so long. I checked and I had commanded that 31 days be listed! Although blogger really didn't let that happen, I'm hoping I've fixed the problem with 7. Yes, I have stopped going to Linkys and other blogs that are very popular but that take so long and sometimes NEVER download. enJOYed this read.

  19. I am not a blogger but read lots and lots of others. My biggest pet peeve is blogs that have movies/ads that start when you open the page. Drives me crazy, especially when I am opening multiple tabs through a linky party. Usually, I find it and close that blog and don't read it because it irritates me so much.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I am not a blogger but I read tons of blogs each week. I love going to linky parties and finding new blogs to follow. Often I will open up to a dozen tabs and when a movie/ad starts playing it drives me crazy. Give me the option to watch it if I want don't force me to watch it. I usually go through all my open tabs, find the "offending" blog and close it and don't read it.

  21. GREAT list of pet peeves!! I agree with you 100%!!!!!! Thanks for linking to my Captcha post!!! Let's educate everyone!!!!!!!!

  22. Thanks for posting these - I found you over at the Taylor House Pinterest Party! I didn't realize that word verification was even on my post - I don't have to verify to reply to comments. It's now off! =) I'm a new follower.

Hope you have a great weekend!

  23. Great List. I hate captcha, usually I just guess if I get it right the reply go through, if it doesn't . . . oh well.

I can understand why some people don't have the gfc, linky followers, etc; it can be a little depressing when you blog following doesn't grow as fast as you would like it too. So, I don't have the widgets BUT I do have buttons, so the followers can follow and I don't have to look at the number every time I am on my blog!!

    Have a great weekend.

  24. You totally nailed it girl!! I agree with everything you said. I might also like to add that I like to encourage and follow "new" bloggers, so if they don't have a widget, then I assume they have so many followers, they probably don't need me or my encouragement. Here is my question....how is it that you are able to use google+ and NOT become a no-reply blogger. I gave it up because it seemed like it was always turning me into a no-reply blogger. Is there a secret???

  25. Word verification is the worst! I once had one that I just couldn't get right. The words were so distorted and the picture of numbers so blurry that I just could not comment on this persons blog. I tried. I really wanted to. But I just couldn't get past the spam blocker. Usually I can get them in the first try, but when I see them, I get aggravated!

  26. I agree!!!! These are great. especially number 5. I give up easy. LOL. Come visit me sometime and get in on my giveaway beofre it goes away. Have a great weekend.

  27. As a new blogger, I really appreciate these types of posts! I think I have the no reply comment & word verification worked out, and I added my social media icons today!

  29. I didn't even know I could add a search box with WordPress, but your post motivated me to go look through my inactive widgets, and there it was! While I was at it, I re-arranged the rest of them. Thank you for this.

  30. Love these, Jessica!
I agree with all of them! One think I would add... not really a pet peeve, but something that is nice to have (and good for the blogger) is a blog button and a way to grab it, in an easy place to find. :-) You know... like you have. lol Makes it easier for me to put their button under Featured Guests when I feature them for my Super Link Party... like Wednesday, when I will be featuring YOU! :-)
    These are great tips!

  32. all of these so very true! I was set to a no reply even tho i had it set up. something went goofy and i was back to no reply again. I couldn't figure out why no one was talking to me ;) And I am one that will not reply if captcha is on...unless I am REALLY impressed with the content. I am old(er) and it is so difficult for my eyes to read those small distorted letters. I'd rather have comment moderation turned on than deal with captcha.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Word verification is pure evil and I know there are times I thought I left comments only to realize later I didn't stay around to verify it and the blogger had a stupid captcha thingie on. So they got no comment. And blogger is the worst about giving you unreadable captchas so you have to relaod and reload until you get one you think you just might be able to read. If you squint and tilt your head a bit.

Also: What is with bloggers with dark backgrounds and white letters? If your blog is going to make me see backwards when I go on to other things I am not going to read it, so it doesn't matter how great your content is.

I also get really annoyed by magazine style blogs. You know, where you get to see the title and a snippet and you have to click to see the post? Hate that! I want to go to the home page of a blog and start reading. And when I finish that post on top I want to keep on reading another post. And another, and another, etc. Bloggers who care more about page loads than the convenience of their readers do not keep my attention.

Flashy things, noise-making things, and popups all convince me the blogger doesn't care if anyone else ever reads their blog.

Sometimes I do a giveaway and the winner will have no way for me to find them to tell them they won. Um, hello?

I think every blogger should enable subscription by email and make that sign up the easiest thing to find on their whole blog.

Last, but not least, I love it when I get comments. I love it so much I am embarrassed to admit how much I love it. Like, I want to bake cupcakes for people who leave me comments. That's how much!
