A Summer of Sewing Ideas

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Hello friends and welcome to my 2012 Summer of Sewing! I'd like to introduce you to a new friend that will be staying with me for the duration of the summer...

This is my Grandmother's Kenmore sewing machine that she brought me to use for the next couple of months.

I've been wanting a machine for some time now but I've never used on in my life. So I decided to borrow this one and try my hand at it. If at the end of the summer I cannot live without one then I will buy one for myself.

But first things first, I need a little help finding my way around the machine. I have an appointment set up this weekend with a very experienced seamstress, my mother :) I'll let you know how that goes.

I've rounded up some simpler sewing projects that I would like to accomplish this summer while I'm on my vacation. Here are a few projects I've found so far. Each picture is linked to the site it belongs to. Please don't pin these images from this site. Click on the pic to take you to the original author's blog.

DIY Casserole Carriers

Toothbrush Carriers from Wash Cloths

Beach Towel Tote

20 Minute Cinch Tee

Dress Form Pincushions -- Link has a great video tutorial

Felt Citrus Coasters

That's six projects so far. At the very least I will have two projects a month. Although I have a feeling I'm really going to like the sewing thing :)

Does anyone out there know of some fun beginner type sewing projects you'd like to suggest?

  1. Hey! I just started sewing recently too and my first project was a cloth headband. They are so easy and so much fun! Also if you want to get better at sewing straight lines, practice on some notebook paper. :) Good luck!!

  2. Yay for sewing!! I think you're gonna love it! I love the toothbrush holders. I might just have to sew a few of those for our road trips this summer. Thanks for the awesome idea! I'm excited to hear more about your summer of sewing. =)

    1. Thanks for the comment Shatzi. I love those toothbrush holders :) We camp a lot and I always just throw my toothbrush in a bag but this is so much better.

  3. Found you on weekend blog walk. Love finding new crafting sites especially as I'm a novice sewer myself.

I love the toothbrush holder. I hate those plastic ones since they get so gross after a couple of uses. Live that you can wash this.

Also, if you haven't already found her, check out the sewing dork blog. She's got lots of cute stuff. A lot of her stuff is for little girls but not everything.
